2. Overview

I’ll explain the following topics, noting their difficulties and suggesting ways to ease them.

  • What is a fraction?
  • Why should I learn about fractions?
  • Calculations with fractions.
  • Writing fractions.
  • Comparing fractions.
  • Equivalent fractions.
  • Simplifying fractions.
  • Decimal fractions.
  • Percentages.
  • Jargon.

The topics won’t be exactly in this order, but rather in what I think is a sensible order for teaching fractions.  I’ll introduce new concepts by building on what has already been explained.  I’ve included references to resources on the internet.  These include worksheets that can be printed and used for practice, and interactive tutorials and games that use fractions.

This website presents extracts of each chapter in the related book called Fractions For Parents. The chapters are listed on the side of this page.
