The chapter explains how and why to do multiplications with combinations of whole numbers and fractions. It is shown how the steps involved are consistent with the steps when multiplying only whole numbers. It is shown that there is no need to memorise one set of rules for whole numbers and a different sets of rules for fractions.
With a practical demonstration (tearing up a page) it is shown why the numerators and denominators of the fractions are multiplied as they are.
This website presents extracts of each chapter in the related book called Fractions For Parents. The chapters are listed on the side of this page.
