11. Adding and subtracting unlike fractions

If we need to add “one half plus one quarter” it is clear that we cannot add them to get 2 somethings because halves and quarters are not the same kind of things.  They are “unlike” fractions (i.e. they are not like each other).  The rule is that we can only add “like” things together – dogs with dogs, pencils with pencils, quarters with quarters.  Using equivalent fractions we can change the appearance of the fractions involved without changing their size.  This lets us get to “like” fractions which can then be added.
